When The Creative Bug Bites — Let Him

July 31, 2021 by Lonnie Lardner

It’s called answering the “artistic need.”

It came through like a brain-bending tornado. And I don’t know why it hit exactly when it did. I had been immersed launching a new small business this week, and felt a bit choked by the complexities of our tech and marketing tasks. I had promised my art partner that I’d stay focused on our business, and try to meet the deadlines in front of us. I felt the pressure and knew that at any minute the dam could break.

Suddenly, I felt sucked into a dizzying vortex. I became defiant, practically childlike in my need to express myself — NOW. It went beyond urge — it felt more like panic. If I didn’t start making art — in some form — I would blow. F**K my promise — I had to make something.

(Pic #3) Detail, Amazon box wall sculpture.

So I ran to the trash and rescued a load of Amazon boxes. I started ripping (therapeutic on its own) and then with absolutely no plan in mind, started squirting and splashing paint all over them. It felt so fantastic, I ripped more and splashed more. Pretty soon I had a multi-level cardboard structure in the house, (Pic #2) and while flimsy, it satisfied me completely. I know it’s not great art. But, as I share in my creativity workshops, that is 100-percent irrelevant. What matters is that I got to answer the call. I soothed a part of my soul and remarkably, came back the next day stronger than ever in my pressing work.

Many studies show that it is critical for human beings to create. The benefits of making art (in any form) are infinite. Art can: 1) Boost our brain function and our immune systems. 2) Improve our mental and emotional health, and 3) Help us process trauma, express difficult feelings, and work through stressful experiences. Case in point: During this year’s pandemic, sales of art and craft supplies jumped by over 200-percent.

It’s a basic human need, and one we should never ignore. Today, I had one of the most productive days I’ve ever had — and I know allowing art back into my routine enriched the hell out of everything else.

Picasso Was Right

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” — Pablo Picasso

I carry on about this all the time in my corporate creativity workshops: consistent artistic expression brings all kinds of creative breakthroughs. But more than that, it’s a chance to feed your soul and experience pure joy.

In times like these (a resurgence in cases of Covid19) we need all the stress relief we can get. Making art —whether in the form of painting, poetry, music, pottery or dance — can offer a way for us to cope, even thrive. So why the heck are we not taking full advantage of the time to create? It comes down to one thing: fear. Fear of not measuring up and fear of letting go. But the big secret is: we didn’t used to be that way.

Mickey’s daily art class / Her Mom Jamie is a supercharged homeschooler right now!

My 5-year-old great niece, Mickey confirmed Picasso’s proclamation again for me today. Fearlessly, when handed some fresh markers, she announced she was going to “draw a scuba diver.”  I’m not sure who she had in mind when she chose that subject, but she totally nailed it. (Pic #1 top). She didn’t stop for second. She conceptualized and executed her vision with chutzpah and complete commitment. No re-thinking, no self-criticism. Pure art from the heart. (And honestly, how brilliant is her concept of being immersed in deep water — represented by all the waves in motion?)

Every time I see Mickey’s artwork I feel a sense of awe. She is making art for herself, freely, and wildly untethered to the insecurities that come with adulthood. I pray the rest of us can find a path to that free expression, and maybe, just maybe, we can reclaim what was once ours.

The Art Of Losing It — It’s A Good Thing

April 30, 2019 by Lonnie Lardner

Confession time. The last thing I do before I go to sleep at night, is think about what kind of treat I’m going to have in the morning. And after breakfast, it’s when can I have my next sweet morsel. I am in fact, much like Winnie the Pooh. Here’s a quote from the star of A.A. Milne beloved’s books.

“When you wake up in the morning, Pooh,” said Piglet at last, “what’s the first thing you say to yourself?”

“What’s for breakfast?” said Pooh. “What do you say, Piglet?”

“I say, I wonder what’s going to happen exciting today” said Piglet.

Pooh nodded thoughtfully, ”It’s the same thing” he said.

But every once in awhile, I am presented with a reminder that the thrill I get feeding my face, is nothing to the one I get when I feed my soul.

Last weekend we did a video shoot for my new website. We needed some closeup shots of someone painting. That would be me. We had specific needs for the video: which brushes to stack, what colors to put on the palette.  But a funny thing happened once we were rolling. I forgot all about the shoot, and lost myself. When the shoot was over, I found myself still messing around with paint on canvas. It was a better high than the best chocolate I’ve ever inhaled. (Sorry about that, Teuscher.)

So, for the 1,765th time, I am reminded that I shouldn’t wait for a “reason” to do what I love. It’s not expensive, it’s not unhealthy, it doesn’t make you fat. My goal tonight, is to go to bed thinking about what art I can create in the morning — before breakfast.
