This is Monkeybutt. He’s down to 3 legs now (truck accident) but I’ve always cherished this picture, because he has completely surrendered to the moment. A total zen bath in nothingness. It’s true cats have always been good at resting, but this moment of bliss inspires me. It steers me to the place of “letting go”— which almost always leads to fresh-brewed creative expression. I’m off to the sofa.
A minimalist drawing that inspires my lazy ass.
My excitement over this sketch is this: It’s packed with energy, loose in style, and created basically with one stroke. it’s probably a 10-second work. It’s also proof that simplicity can be a beautiful artistic statement. In one jittery marking, the artist here has captured “the essence of cat.”
If you’re considering a dive into some basic drawing, try this. Look at the image above, and see if you can create your own one-liner. It’s super satisfying, and just might tackle your fear. There is no perfect way to draw a cat, and you could consider it a sort of warm-up for other sketches. It’s easy, pressure-free and requires no art-making experience. Try this approach with a cool wide-tip marker or piece of charcoal, and find time to draw every day.

How the cat (once again) taught us the biggest lesson of all.
I guess you could call it “complete surrender.” That moment of total submission, when you appreciate every nanosecond of a euphoric experience. In the case of Monkeybutt (above) this photo pretty much captures the essence of his luxuriating in the garden, stretching his neck heavenward, breathing in every lavender bloom’s heady scent, and whatever else his sense of smell finds interesting. We are witnessing total joy.
I’m so jealous. While pure joy is achievable for humans too, most of us don’t take the time to snatch it out of the air. It can be easily precipitated by a chorus of music, an abstract painting, a simple line in a Robert Frost poem, or the sound of a baby giggling. And guess what. Experts tell us that taking in these moments can improve our mental and physical well-being.

This kind of joy can last for hours while decreasing negative emotions and depression.”
Not sure Monkeybutt understands any of that. Nor do I think he’s subject to a bout of depression anytime soon. But like most cats, I know he is way ahead of us. So I’m taking notice.
